What generative AI actually is
A generative model learns the underlying distribution of the data it is trained on — how tokens follow tokens in text, how pixels relate in images — and samples from that distribution to produce new artifacts. Because the model has a rich internal representation of the domain, the samples can be novel, coherent, and contextually responsive to a prompt. That is the capability that drove the 2023-2025 wave of enterprise adoption.
Classical machine learning, by contrast, maps an input to a label or a number from a fixed output space. A fraud classifier returns "fraud" or "not fraud"; a demand forecaster returns a numeric estimate. Both are useful, but neither produces a new artifact.
The architecture families that matter
- Transformer-based LLMs. The dominant architecture for text and code. Enterprise-relevant models include GPT-4/5, Claude, Gemini, Llama, Mistral, and Qwen. These models can also be paired with tool-calling and memory to form agents.
- Diffusion models. The dominant architecture for images, audio, and emerging video applications. Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, and proprietary models from OpenAI and Google are the familiar names.
- Hybrid and specialized architectures. Code models, structured-output models, and domain-tuned variants layered on top of the general-purpose base.
Enterprise adoption patterns
The patterns that have shipped at scale:
- Drafting copilots. Embedded in email, CRM, documents, tickets. A user writes a prompt; the model drafts; the user edits and sends.
- Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). The model is given access to a proprietary knowledge base so it can answer questions grounded in source material the base model never saw.
- Structured extraction. The model reads unstructured input (PDF, email, scan) and produces structured output (JSON, database row) for a downstream system.
- Code assistance. Autocomplete, explain-the-code, generate-tests, and increasingly, structured-change suggestions.
- Synthetic data. For test environments, privacy-preserving analytics, and training data augmentation.
