The decision framework

  1. Map existing investment. If Microsoft dominates the stack, Fabric gets a thumb on the scale. If AWS or GCP matters, Databricks does.
  2. Identify the dominant workload. BI-dominant workloads favor Fabric. ML-dominant workloads favor Databricks. Mixed workloads push toward the platform the team knows better.
  3. Assess the team. Spark-fluent teams get productive on Databricks fast. Microsoft-SQL-fluent teams get productive on Fabric fast. The wrong platform for the team wastes the first six months.
  4. Pilot one workload on each. Two platforms, one real workload, 4-6 weeks. The winner is the one the team wants to keep using.
  5. Commit. Platform indecision is expensive. Pick one as primary; allow the other as a secondary for specific workloads if needed.

Where the "run both" pattern fits

Can we run both?

Is Fabric just repackaged Synapse?
