OpenAI as the cloud AI default

OpenAI's GPT family remains the most widely deployed cloud LLM platform in enterprise AI. The combination of model quality, API maturity, tool-calling support, structured-output reliability, and the broader ecosystem (Assistants API, file search, code interpreter) makes OpenAI the default first choice for most enterprise AI workloads where cloud hosting is acceptable. For clients without data-residency or vendor-independence constraints, OpenAI is often the integration we deploy first.

How Thoughtwave integrates OpenAI

Our OpenAI engagements cover:

  • Chat Completions API for the core generative workload — drafting, classification, extraction, summarization.
  • Function calling for tool use where the model invokes external APIs as part of its response — the foundation for agentic workflows.
  • Structured Outputs for JSON-schema-constrained responses that integrate reliably with downstream systems.
  • Assistants API for persistent-state conversations with file attachments, retrieval, and code interpretation when the workflow benefits from it.
  • Embeddings API for semantic search, RAG retrieval, and classification against a vector index.
  • Batch API for high-volume asynchronous workloads where cost-per-token matters more than latency.

The TWSS CS Agent, TWSS Finance AI/ML, and TWSS AI Custom Agents accelerators all support OpenAI as a model choice. Model selection is workload-specific and evaluated empirically during the pilot.

Authentication and governance

OpenAI integration uses API-key authentication with organizational-scope keys for enterprise accounts. For enterprise clients we deploy with OpenAI's data-processing addendum in place, use the no-training flag to keep client data out of future model training, and configure scoped project keys per workload. For clients with HIPAA or more stringent requirements, Azure OpenAI is typically the right path instead.

When OpenAI is the right default

For enterprise AI workloads where data can flow to a U.S. cloud vendor under standard commercial terms, OpenAI's combination of model quality and tooling maturity wins most evaluations we run. The trade-off is vendor dependence on pricing, roadmap, and capacity. Our engagements plan for model-switching from day one — the application is decoupled from the specific model via a thin model-interface layer — so a later move to Anthropic, Azure OpenAI, or self-hosted is a configuration change, not a rewrite.
