Microsoft Power BI in enterprise BI

Power BI is Microsoft's enterprise BI platform and — within the Microsoft stack — the category-dominant visualization and semantic-modeling tool. With Fabric, Power BI has moved from a separate product to a first-class Fabric experience consuming OneLake directly. For Microsoft-centric enterprises, Power BI is typically the primary BI surface; for multi-vendor enterprises, Power BI is one of the three major BI options alongside Tableau and Looker.

How Thoughtwave integrates Power BI

Our Power BI engagements cover:

  • Semantic models on Fabric (replacing the legacy Analysis Services models) with DirectLake and DirectQuery patterns for OneLake-backed analytics.
  • Report design aligned to the client's visualization standards and executive-reporting cadence.
  • Row-level and column-level security for multi-tenant semantic model deployments.
  • Workspace and capacity architecture — per-domain workspaces, appropriate Fabric capacity allocation, deployment pipelines between dev/test/prod.
  • Embedded Power BI for clients where BI capabilities surface inside the client's own applications.
  • Paginated reports for operational reporting formats that the standard interactive reports do not handle well.

For clients modernizing to Microsoft Fabric, Power BI is the natural BI consumption layer. Our Fabric case study details the full modernization pattern end-to-end.

Authentication and governance

Power BI runs under Microsoft Entra tenant authentication with workspace-level roles governing access. For regulated clients, semantic-model row-level security enforces data-classification requirements at query time. Governance integrates natively with Purview for lineage and classification across the broader Microsoft data estate.

When Power BI is the right BI tool

For Microsoft-centric enterprises with Fabric or legacy Azure data infrastructure, Power BI is typically the right primary BI tool. The integration depth, the commercial story (included in most M365 enterprise agreements), and the semantic-model strength are all arguments for Power BI over Tableau or Looker. For enterprises with multi-cloud data platforms and BI-tool neutrality as a primary requirement, the decision is more nuanced — Tableau and Looker have arguments that compete well outside the Microsoft stack.
