Azure OpenAI Service for Microsoft-centric AI
Azure OpenAI Service is Microsoft's managed integration of OpenAI's GPT family into the Azure platform. For Microsoft-centric enterprises — particularly those in regulated industries requiring HIPAA BAA, FedRAMP, or specific data-residency guarantees — Azure OpenAI is the path to frontier OpenAI capability under the Microsoft compliance envelope rather than direct OpenAI API integration.
How Thoughtwave integrates Azure OpenAI
Our Azure OpenAI engagements cover:
- GPT family model access — GPT-4, GPT-4o, GPT-5 family and the smaller cost-efficient variants under Azure commercial terms.
- Assistants API (Azure OpenAI's implementation) for stateful conversation workloads with file attachments and code interpretation.
- Embeddings via Azure OpenAI's embedding models for RAG retrieval workloads.
- Azure AI Foundry integration for the broader agentic and AI-application surface beyond raw model access.
- Content filtering configured to the client's content-safety requirements.
- Provisioned throughput units (PTUs) for high-volume workloads requiring consistent capacity.
For clients running HIPAA-regulated workloads on Azure, Azure OpenAI is typically the only viable path to GPT capability — direct OpenAI API integration does not offer BAA terms for all product tiers. Our TWSS Finance AI/ML and CS Agent accelerators deploy on Azure OpenAI for Microsoft-stack regulated clients.
Authentication and compliance
Azure OpenAI runs under Microsoft Entra authentication with scoped application registrations. HIPAA BAA is available for qualifying deployments. FedRAMP Moderate and High environments support government and regulated-industry workloads. Data residency options cover EU, US, and Asia-Pacific regions depending on the model.
When Azure OpenAI is the right AI path
For Microsoft-centric enterprises already running workloads on Azure with Entra identity, Purview governance, and M365 productivity, Azure OpenAI is the path of least friction for frontier OpenAI capability. The compliance envelope is already in place; the billing consolidates; the governance story integrates natively. For non-Microsoft enterprises or for clients deliberately maintaining vendor-neutrality, direct OpenAI API access or Bedrock (for AWS-centric) is usually preferred.
